Over 200 Mbale Pupils Face Hard Choices After PLE Result Cancellation
The dreams of over 200 Primary Seven candidates in Mbale District have been put on hold following the official cancellation of their Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results by the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). The cancellation was the result of a rigorous investigation that confirmed third-party assistance and external leakage during the exam period.
The decision has sparked mixed emotions across the district. While some education purists have praised UNEB for maintaining the integrity of national assessments, affected parents and students are in deep distress. Many parents argue that they were not the perpetrators of the cheating, laying the blame squarely on school administrators who allegedly orchestrated the malpractice to boost their school’s public rankings.
“We paid school fees, bought scholastic materials, and trusted the teachers,” said an aggrieved parent during a community meeting. “It is unfair to punish the children for the sins of adults.” UNEB, however, remains resolute. Executive Director Dan Odongo previously noted that condoning malpractice devalues the entire Ugandan academic system.
The affected schools have been blacklisted as UNEB centers, and the headteachers are currently assisting police with criminal investigations under the strict UNEB Act of 2021. The affected pupils are now faced with a difficult choice: repeat Primary Seven and sit for the examinations in the upcoming cycle, or seek alternative vocational pathways. District leaders are currently setting up counseling camps to help the traumatized children navigate the emotional fallout of the decision.
