Airtel Uganda Awards 20 STEM Students with Merit Scholarships and Laptops

In a major boost to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, Airtel Uganda has officially awarded 20 exceptional university students with comprehensive scholarships and high-performance laptops. The beneficiaries were drawn from leading public and private institutions, including Makerere University, Kyambogo University, and the Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

The Airtel STEM initiative is designed to remove financial barriers that prevent brilliant, low-income students from reaching their full academic potential. The scholarship covers tuition fees, research grants, and living stipends, allowing the students to focus entirely on their innovations.

“Investing in STEM is investing in the future of Uganda’s economy,” an Airtel representative said during the handover ceremony in Kampala. “These laptops are not just gadgets; they are windows to the world. We want these young minds to build software, analyze big data, and engineer solutions that will transform health, agriculture, and finance in East Africa.

The recipients were selected based on project pitches that addressed localized problems. One recipient from Makerere University is developing a mobile app to help rural expectant mothers track their antenatal appointments, while another from MUST is working on a solar-powered soil sensor to help farmers determine the best irrigation schedules. Through initiatives like this, the corporate sector is proving to be a vital partner in bridging the resource gap in Ugandan higher education.
