Kyambogo University Senate Summons Students Over Exam Irregularities

The management of Kyambogo University has summoned dozens of students to appear before the Senate Examinations Committee following a string of irregularities reported during the recently concluded Semester I exams. The students, primarily from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the School of Management and Entrepreneurship, face charges ranging from “smuggling unauthorized materials” to “impersonation.”

The Academic Registrar’s office published the list of summons on the university’s official notice boards and digital portals on March 19. According to university policy, any student found guilty of exam malpractice faces a minimum penalty of a one-year suspension or, in severe cases, permanent expulsion and the nullification of all previous academic records.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Eli Katunguka has taken a personal interest in the matter, emphasizing that the university’s reputation is non-negotiable. “Kyambogo is a center of excellence. We cannot produce graduates who believe that cheating is a viable strategy for success in the professional world,” Katunguka said during a staff briefing.

The summons come at a time when universities are struggling to stay ahead of “hi-tech” cheating, including the use of smartwatches and AI-generated “cheat sheets.” Kyambogo has responded by deploying more invigilators and implementing a “no-phone” zone within 50 meters of any examination hall. The hearings, which begin on March 26, will be held in camera, with students allowed to bring a representative as part of the fair hearing process.
