MUASA Elections: Dr. Ssempebwa Secures Landmark Victory to Lead Makerere Academic Staff
The Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) has a new leader following a heated but transparent electoral process. Dr. Ssempebwa emerged victorious, securing a commanding 78% of the total votes cast by the university’s academic fraternity. The election, which drew massive participation from various colleges, is seen as a turning point for staff-management relations at Uganda’s oldest public university.
During his victory speech, Dr. Ssempebwa expressed gratitude to the academic staff for their trust and promised an era of constructive dialogue rather than confrontational strikes. His campaign was heavily anchored on three pillars: improving staff welfare, harmonizing salary disparities, and bridging the communication gap between the academic staff and the University Council.
“The voice of the academician must be respected,” Dr. Ssempebwa stated. “We are not just employees; we are the intellectual backbone of this nation. My administration will focus on ensuring that our research is funded, our promotions are merit-based and timely, and our working conditions reflect the dignity of higher education.“
The incoming executive faces immediate challenges. Chief among them is the ongoing push for the government to fulfill its promise of 100% salary enhancement for all public university staff. Furthermore, there are growing concerns regarding the heavy teaching loads handled by lecturers due to understaffing in several departments. Political analysts and education experts are watching closely to see how Dr. Ssempebwa’s team will balance aggressive advocacy with the diplomacy required to negotiate with the Ministry of Education and Sports.
